World's Largest Lite Brite

In more display news, shoe company ASICS comissioned the world's largest Lite Brite to be build for a new shoe or something.  It measures 11x15 feet and has more than 300,000 pieces.  Kinda makes some of my Lite Brite creations as a kid seem a little less impressive.  But at least with my Lite Brite I made things cooler than a shoe.

CineMassive OmegaPlex - Display Overkill

CineMassive is a company that specialises in huge, multi-monitor displays and software to utilize them.  One of their offerings, dubbed the OmegaPlex, consists of a dozen 24-inch LCDs, each with a resolution of 1920x1200.  With the monitors in 3 rows of 4, that makes for a total screen resolution of 7860x3600 and 27,648,000 total pixels.

It comes with software so you can actually utilize all the screen area, a 3-year warranty, a zero-dead-pixel guarantee, a multi-monitor wallpaper, VGA and DVI cables, and a lint-free microfiber cloth.  Considering the "New Low Price" is $12,995, that better be a very nice microfiber cloth!

When you consider that the price breaks down to just under $1100 per monitor, it is not too terrible of a price, well, as long as you have that much extra cash lying around.  Many large format displays and high-end projectors are similarly priced, and the OmegaPlex offers some functionatily that other types of displays do not.  Read all about it here.

OLED Micro Displays

OLEDs (Organic Light Emitting Diodes) are beginning to be used in more and more applications.  One of the more interesting is a series of micro-displays from eMagin.  There are several lower resolution displays available now, but they have demonstrated and are preparing to ship new SXGA (1280x1024) displays.  With the resolution, response time, brightness, and color spectrum increasing while the manufacturing costs are decreasing, within a few years these might be commonplace for video games and other home entertainment.

Robotic Jellyfish

Festo, a German engineering company, has designed some interesting things.  Last year, they made a robotic flying manta ray, now they have made some robotic jellyfish.  One version flies through the air and another swims under water.  Watch the video to see.

T-Mobile G1

In case you have missed all the buzz over the past few months, or if you just need to be reminded, T-Mobile is officially releasing their Google Android-powered "smartphone" dubbed the G1 tomorrow.  Check out Engadget's in-depth review of the G1 for some of the details of the phone.

While some say the G1 isn't an I-Phone killer, it is definitely worth checking out.  And this is only the first Android phone, many more are on the way.  It will be interesting to see how they develop and evolve over time, especially as far the openness of the platform in contrast to more closed platforms such as Apple's.

AMD to Split

It has been rumoured for a while now, but it is official nowAMD is splitting into two companies; one being the design company, the other being the manufacturing company.  As of right now, it looks like the name of the new fab company is, get this, The Foundry Company.  I guess it could be much worse.  Hopefully this will help AMD focus more and be able to get back on track in the CPU sector.

World's Largest Computing Grid

CERN has officially launched the largest computing grid on Earth, for now.  Even though the LHC is down for a while, the computing grid is now operational and will be available to process all the data from the LHC.

The LHC Computing Grid consists of many other computing grids around the world.  Also, the LHC@home project acts in conjunction with the grid.

More Free Stuff from Cooler Master

Well, I just found out I won another prize from Cooler Master.  This time it's a Hyper Z600R CPU heatsink.  I'm currently using a Hyper 212 I won in a previous contest, so it will be interesting to see how the two compare.

Toxic Mac Pros?

According to a French newspaper, some Mac Pros are emitting burning smells and benzene fumes into the air when in use.  Not quite as nice as the new ASUS laptops, but similar in some ways, I guess.  And Apple probably did not mean for their computers to emit smells, unlike ASUS.  The results are only preliminary as of now, but several labs are currently analyzing the problem.

Benzene is used in the manufacturing process of various plastics, resins, glues, and several other synthetic materials.  It is a carcinogen, so having your computer spew it into the air around is definitely not good.  There are not many details or thorough test results available yet, but it looks like Apple might have a problem on their hands.
